Suffering From Hyperhidrosis? Don’t Sweat It.

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a condition affecting millions of people around the world. Excessive sweating can affect various parts of the body including the face, hands, feet or underarms. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic we only offer treatment for underarms. Localized sweating problems are generally unrelated to underlying medical conditions. Botox is a long lasting treatment for hyperhidrosis that really works.

Unlike topical treatments, Botox targets sweating at its source. our physician injects tiny amounts of Botox into both underarms, skillfully and safely. Botox enters the sweat glands in the underarms responsible for sweating and blocks sweat release. The treatment can be done in a few short minutes.

Patients treated with Botox notice a remarkable improvement in hyperhidrosis symptoms. In clinical studies, 95% of patients with hyperhidrosis that was severe enough to interfere with their daily lives experienced the benefits of Botox after just 1 week, with sweating reduced by an average of 83%!

After the first treatment, the effects of Botox lasts an average of about 7.5 months. For nearly 40% of patients, Botox reduced sweating for more than 1 year. The amount of time Botox remains effective may vary. When your symptoms begin to return, contact us to book another appointment!

Botox has been used successfully to treat a range of medical conditions for many years now. Side effects, if they occur, are temporary. The most common side effects with Botox for this condition is a perceived increase in sweating in areas other than the underarms.

If your underarm sweating is excessive and interferes with work, lifestyle etc., then your Botox treatment may be covered under your private insurance plan. Our Botox is kept on site and there is no need for you to get a prescription and pick it up elsewhere. If you have coverage for Botox we do not require you to pay the full amount at the time of your visit. We will send your forms away and await reimbursement. All we ask is that you pay our physician administering fee, and leave the rest to us.

Hyperhidrosis is a common condition, but not one you need to suffer with anymore. Book your consultation with our physician today and let us help.

Preventative Use of Botox for Wrinkles

47e39d33a242e12ddd11fdc9bfecee4fIs it too early for Botox? The question of when to start isn’t as straightforward as you may think. It depends on your facial structure and your predisposition for wrinkling. Many of our patients wait for the first signs of wrinkles to occur before treatment. However, Botox is becoming increasingly popular among 20-something men and women as a means of preventing their youthful skin from aging.

By using Botox earlier in life, you will keep lines from forming. Creases become etched in our skin over time as we make the same expressions.  If you receive this treatment, you can reduce muscle movement in wrinkle-prone areas before the deep lines appear.  If you have dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that occur when you animate) then using Botox will help prevent the formation of static wrinkles (wrinkles that occur even at rest.)

Don’t forget, to prevent fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots daily use of sunscreen is an absolute must for everyone at every age. Nature’s Veil, SPF 30 is a broad spectrum physical sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays with micronized titanium and zinc oxides that offer no chemicals, fragrance, or parabens. It’s fortified with antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E, Ferulic acid ester and melanin for enhanced protection. For a full line of our products please click here.

Keep in mind, Botox studies have not been completed on anyone younger than the age of 18, and is not recommended for pregnant women. If you’re thinking of getting this treatment but aren’t sure it’s right for you, come visit our physician for a no pressure, honest, and accurate consultation. We deliver beautiful, natural results every time. Contact us today!

Botox, Dysport, and Fillers: What You Can Expect

Many of us have heard of Botox and dermal fillers but the question now is what can you expect from each of these procedures? How long until you see results and how long will these effects last? Botox, Dysport, and dermal fillers have the ability to provide quick and effective results. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic in Ottawa we offer simple, non-surgical solutions for facial wrinkles and lines.

Botox/ Dysport

Botox and Dysport can be done in a few short minutes and offers no down time. Tiny red dots will appear with minimal to no swelling for up to a half an hour after your appointment. Most patients will see the results of their injections begin to work between 5-7 days of having them done and continue to improve until approximately two weeks. Effect will gradually wear off over the next 3-4 months. Once the effects begin, the areas treated, i.e. the frown lines, crow’s feet etc., will appear more relaxed and in fact the whole face starts to benefit as patients take on a less stressed and more rested appearance. It’s subtle but noticeable – people will think you look “better” but they’re not sure why.

Immediately After Filler

When performed properly, patients receive instant gratification with fillers. Dermal fillers work by plumping up the area around the injection site giving your face a more youthful appearance. They can be done within half an hour, and also offer minimal down time. You’ll be asked to come in half an hour prior to your appointment to have the area being treated frozen with a topical cream. Fillers are temporary, meaning they will degrade or be absorbed over time. Most hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have compositions that offer results ranging between six to ten months depending on the product and where it is used.

As with any cosmetic procedure be sure to listen and trust your doctor’s advice. Here at Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic, our physician offers honest and accurate advice. She can best advise what product will work for you at the time of your appointment. Contact us today!

Using Botox or Dermal Fillers to Combat Frown Lines

If you’d like nothing more than to turn your frown upside down but can’t because of wrinkles, you know what a challenge frown lines can be. There are two types of wrinkles, dynamic ones, which are caused by movement, and static ones, which are etched into our skin and appear while the face is at rest. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic we have a couple of options to diminish those unwanted lines.

Botox or Dysport for Frown Lines

If you’re considering Botox or Dysport to combat your frown lines, you’re not alone. Botox is used to fight against dynamic wrinkles and is a relatively quick and easy fix. Injections only take a few seconds, and recovery time is minimal. During your visit with our physician, she will decide how many units of of the injection you’ll need. The price will vary from individual to individual.  Though it takes from three to seven days for the initial onset of injections, the effects last for three to four months.

Fillers for Frown Lines

Finding the fountain of youth doesn’t just involve Botox;fillers are often effective and necessary supplements for static wrinkles. Unlike Botox, which freeze the muscles around the frown line and prevent them from contracting, injectable cosmetic fillers fill the wrinkle and make the skin look smoother. Both of these types of injections can be completed at the same time and done in about a half an hour appointment. The results from fillers are instant and have the ability to last for up to twelve months!

Let us take you from frowning to fabulous! Book your consultation today with our physician to decide whether you need Botox, fillers, or both. Why wait? Contact us today!

Using Botox to Make Eyebrows Symmetrical

Eyebrow Symmetry

Botox is well known for reducing wrinkles and reinventing the aging face, but did you know Botox has the ability to correct uneven eyebrows? Symmetry is considered one of the greatest  assets in an attractive appearance and unfortunately eyebrows are one of the easiest  asymmetrical features to notice.

Before the Botox brow lift became available, men and women were subject to costly, invasive surgery with a lengthy recovery time. This quick, affordable procedure can be done in less than half an hour with absolutely no recovery time. You can even go back to work after having this procedure done!

Botox is used to lift the brows to sit higher or used to lower the brow to sit evenly across from the other. There are two types of muscles in our face, the agonist and the antagonist. The antagonist muscles have a downward pull while the agonist muscles have an upward pull. During your consultation with our physician she will decide what muscles the Botox will be injected into to create the desired look.

The cost of this procedure will be based on the amount of Botox used which will vary from person to person. The quantity of units used will depend on the amount of correction that is needed. The effects of Botox will last approximately 3-4 months.

The key factor in a successful Botox lift for your eyebrows is to seek out a provider that has thorough knowledge of facial anatomy and understands the actions of facial expression. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic you can be confident in the abilities of our physician who offers honest and accurate advice. Call now to book your appointment!

Sun Damage: Prevention and Treatment

It was a hot and muggy summer this year. Did you remember to protect your skin from sun damage?

We live in a society that loves the sun and that bronze-y glow associated with tanning, but beware: live life as a sunworshipper and you’ll pay the price for it with your skin!

Wrinkles, ptosis, pigmentation irregularities, and spots – the signs of aging are all too inevitable. However, while some are caused by gravity and your genes (intrinsic) and are out of your control, others are caused by the environment (extrinsic), and most specifically, the sun. Every person has the ability to control the level of extrinsic aging that occurs to them.

In other words, many signs of aging can result from and worsen with frequent sun damage.

So what can you do?

Well, first off, it’s all about prevention. Protect your skin from the sun! Sounds pretty simple, huh? All you have to do is slather on the sunscreen, allowing about 20 minutes for it to absorb into your skin before venturing outside, and reapply every 2 hours or less if sweating heavily or swimming. Don’t forget to cover up, as well, by wearing a hat and staying in the shade.

Now, for treatment, there are several options. Please note that many of these treatments are not compatible with frequent sun exposure. For example, we specifically instruct clients to stay out of the sun if they undergo laser skin treatment, since the skin is quite vulnerable following treatment.

Degradation of the epidermis and dermis, the two upper layers of the skin, combined with reduced moisture content and filaggrin is what causes skin to thin, loose, wrinkled and become blotchy. While treatment cannot reverse the aging process, it can improve the appearance of aged skin by smoothing out the complexion and achieving a more uniform tone. Here are the noninvasive cosmetic skin care treatments available at Dermaworks that are specially designed for  symptoms of sun damage:

Injectable Fillers
A tired and old appearance is often attributed to a loss of volume in facial contours. Injectable fillers such as Juvederm can fill out contours to reclaim a more youthful look.

BOTOX® Cosmetic
Squinting to protect the eyes from the sun’s glare can cause serious wrinkles and lines around the eyes. BOTOX® Cosmetic smooths out these dynamic wrinkles. Also it is excellent for the frown lines and forehead lines.

Laser Skin Treatment
Best for treating finer lines, acne and lesions, Laser Skin Treatment can achieve a smoother complexion and healthy glow.

Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing
DOT Therapy with Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing can rejuvenate the skin by targeting wrinkles, pigmentation irregularities, scarring resulting from acne. The skin will be tighter and have more collagen. It is the gold standard for skin resurfacing. Downtime can be from minimal to up to 10 days depending on settings used and degree of change needed.

Vibradermabrasion / Microdermabrasion
Vibradermabrasion / Microdermabrasion gently exfoliates the skin, removing the uppermost layers. This gives the skin an healthy glow and smooth texture.

Facial Mesotherapy
The diminished hyaluronic acid levels in our skin leads to dry, thin, fragile skin that looks aged. Facial Mesotherapy replenishes moisture levels thereby achieving more suppleness and volume.

But don’t be totally sun-phobic! A little sun exposure is actually good for us, making up for about 90% of the Vitamin D we need to remain healthy. Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, as a deficiency has been scientifically linked to the development of osteoporosis as it helps the body absorb calcium. Just don’t go overboard with it! Also 1000 I.U. of vitamin D orally will have you covered.

Juvederm ™ Dermal Fillers For Men

Statistics compiled for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that only 9% of the total number of cosmetic procedures performed last year targeted men. A small percentage, indeed, but that’s still a staggering 1.1 million cosmetic procedures!

The secret’s out: men are turning to aesthetic medicine to look good.

While the most popular procedure was BOTOX® (for women, too), rounding out the list at number 5 was Soft Tissue Fillers, also known as Dermal Fillers. According to the same survey, there were 34,256 procedures performed in 2009 that involved hyaluronic acid based fillers, namely Juvederm ™ and Restylane® – a 10% increase from 2008.

How can Juvederm ™ help men?

The answer is easy: in just about the same ways it can help women. Like most nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, this product isn’t gender-specific. This “next-generation” dermal filler is designed to add volume to tissue, which not only allows wrinkles, creases and lines to smooth out, but also allows facial contours to be redefined. Juvederm ™ can safely and effectively treat aesthetic problems in both women or men. The only difference is what kind of results are desired.

Many men, like women, are concerned about rejuvenating their appearance. As we age, the skin begins to sag and creases form. Nasolabial folds, vertical lip lines, and marionette lines are common problems that are targeted with Juvederm ™. Even lip augmentation, a procedure most of us associate with the Trout Pouts of Hollywood starlets, can be performed using this dermal filler. But obviously, men don’t go for the fullness women desire. Rather,  lip augmentation for men achieves results that contribute to a more youthful appearance, eliminating lip lines and/or a sunken appearance. And in general, most men prefer to achieve results that are more subtle and refined.

Juvederm ™ is a great nonsurgical way to achieve a more youthful appearance. With results generally apparent immediately following a 30 minute treatment, it’s no wonder that it’s one of the most popular cosmetic procedures at our nonsurgical cosmetic clinic in Ottawa!

Another Way to Plump Up Your Lips

TNS Lip Plump System™ is a product for topical application from SkinMedica®, a leading skincare manufacturing company that creates innovative products that rejuvenate the skin.

TNS Lip Plump System™ is a 2-step regimen designed to enhance, rejuvenate, condition and smooth the lips with a combination of effective ingredients that have been clinically proven to restore the youthful appearance of the skin. The system is composed of Lip Renewal™ and Lip Plumper.

Lip Renewal™
The first step of the regimen is application of Lip Renewal™ to the lips and around the edges of the lip contour. This unique formula does a number of things –  it conditions the lips to make them smoother and softer, boosts volume, improves surface texture, increase definition and moisturizes. And if that isn’t enough, it can also reduce minor “smoker’s lines”.

Lip Plumper
Lip Plumper is the second step of the system that you simply apply to the lips and stay within the natural lip line. In the form of a clear gloss, it also helps to boost volume and moisturize. Wear it under or over lipstick/lip gloss, but you may even want to go bare since it does have the ability to enhance your natural lip colour with a gorgeous glossy finish. Don’t worry if you feel tingling –  that just means it’s working! Lip Plumper includes Benzyl Nicotinate, an ingredient that is designed to increase microcirculation in the skin to enhance natural colour; that tingling sensation is the pleasant flush that results from increased blood flow.

TNS Lip Plump System™ is now available at Dermaworks. It may be considered a milder alternative to dermal fillers which require an injection to administer the product, however results may not be as immediate or dramatic.

Ottawa Juvederm – What It Can Do

At Dermaworks, we can help you achieve a more youthful appearance and improved facial contours with Juvéderm ™, one of the most popular dermal fillers in the Ottawa area. With a single treatment, you can experience a remarkable rejuvenation of your appearance without having to undergo invasive surgery – just one (or more) injection is all that’s required!

Wondering what problems on the face that Juvederm ™ can help you with? Here’s a convenient diagram to show you what it can do:

The wrinkles at the outside corners of the eyes, more familiarly known as crow’s feet, can also be minimized or eliminated in appearance.

Juvederm ™ effectively treats aesthetic flaws on the face by “filling them out”. The product features unique ingredients that bind to the water that is present in your skin, thereby adding volume to a crease, contour or depression. This smooths out the flaw to achieve the desirable results. It on this premise that a whole host of problems may be corrected, such as nasolabial folds, smoker’s wrinkles (vertical lip lines), deep acne scars, thin lips, sunken cheeks and more – just ask us to find out what other flaws may be targeted!

If you are looking for an Ottawa Juvederm ™ injection, please contact us at 613-667-9455 to book your consultation with a licensed physician. The Chief Physician of Dermaworks has extensive knowledge of facial structure and years of experience in treating wrinkles and improving facial contours with Juvederm ™, as well as a variety of other injectable filler products. Which is Better for You: Restylane or Juvederm?

As far as dermal fillers in Ottawa go, Restylane® and Juvederm ™ are two of the most popular products in Canada. Their popularity is probably due to their ability to effectively achieve desirable results, relatively quickly and safely. They can also treat a variety of aesthetic problems: smoothing out mild to moderate facial wrinkles, augmenting the lips, filling out scars, and changing facial contours like the chin and cheeks – all from a treatment that doesn’t involve incisions and takes less than an hour.

Here are the similarities:

  • Both are in a gel form based on hyaluronic acid, responsible for maintaining volume and moisture levels in the skin.
  • Both come in syringes.
  • Both are injected into the skin.
  • Both come in different intensities, as distinguished by the median size of the gel’s particles and the concentration of hyaluronic acid. The problem determines the intensity.
  • Both achieve temporary results with minimal downtime. Side effects include short lived swelling, irritation and bruising.

And here are the differences:

Restylane® was the first hyaluronic acid based injectable filler approved by the FDA. Introduced to the market back in 2004, the product is a gel composed of microspheres that differ in size according to intensity (larger particles means it’s more intense and can last longer). One syringe contains 1cc.

Results generally last about half a year or more. Juvederm ™, on the other hand, can last anywhere from 3 months or more. However, reports all say something different here – some patients find this injection lasts longer, while others prefer Restylane®. It really depends on the patient, doctor, and problem corrected.

Juvederm ™ is manufactured to be smoother in consistency than Restylane®. Many physicians believe this smooth texture allows it to achieve better results in some areas of the face, particularly the lips. One syringe contains .80cc.

Side effects from a Juvederm ™ injection can last for about 24 hours. On the other hand, many patients find the side effects resulting from Restylane® can last up to 3 days.
