The human body is fitted with its own cooling system. When body temperature reaches over the approximate ideal of 36.6 °C for whatever reason, sweat is released onto the skin so that it may evaporate, allowing the body to cool itself. Known as evaporative cooling, sweating prevents the body from overheating.

However, some individuals produce an excess of sweat beyond what is required to cool down. This is a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis, affecting close to 3% of the population. The entire body may be affected or specific areas, commonly the armpits (axillae), the hands and the feet.
