6 Ways to Keep Hands Looking Young

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014

No matter the journey you’re currently on, you have worked hard to get where you are, and your hands have been by your side since day one. They have worked hard for you throughout your years and sometimes they might show their age. While you might fret about laugh lines and wrinkles on your face, what about aging signs on your hands? Here are six ways to keep your hands looking young.

  1. Moisturize:Skin’s health and appearance are affected by moisture. Without water, skin’s natural processes, like exfoliation, cannot occur normally, so maintaining an optimal level of moisture in skin is essential to its look and feel. Skin that is not well hydrated may also be more susceptible to inflammatory skin conditions.
  1. Get a Manicure:Showing some love to your cuticles and nails is important to keep your hands looking young. However, remember to give your nails a break in between manicures so they can recover from the last coat of polish.
  1. Exfoliate: For silky smooth skin from head to toe, make exfoliating hands part of your skin care routine. While the face gets most of the attention when it comes to exfoliation and sloughing off dead skin cells, you can keep your hands soft and youthful with a little extra care. If your hands regularly feel dry and rough, exfoliating several times per week should improve their condition relatively quickly. People with oilier skin will probably find they need to exfoliate less often, while those with dry skin may find daily exfoliation helpful.
  1. Wear gloves while doing the dishes: Water is your hands’ worst enemy. If we could hire a professional dishwasher, we would, but for most of us, gloves are a decent alternative. Be sure to wear them while doing the dishes to prevent the harsh soap and hot water from ruining your skin and nails
  1. Wear sunscreen. Sun damage is the biggest culprit of old-looking hands. Applying sunscreen to your hands on a daily basis will help prevent dark spots, also known as sun spots from forming. Sunscreen is important because the sun can get to your skin even while you’re doing everyday tasks, like driving.
  1. Get laser treatment: Laser skin treatment is a revolutionary medical technology that has helped millions of people worldwide improve their appearance and self-perception, quickly and effectively eliminating blemishes on the face and body. Melanin is the dark pigment in the skin and is produced by melanocytes (cells). Pigmented lesions occur when an abundance of melanocytes are found in the skin. When dark pigment multiplies it forms freckles, brown age spots, and other pigmented lesions.

Before                                         After

At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic we offer one of the most effective laser skin technologies in the industry– Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing with Dermal Optical Thermolysis (DOT) Therapy using the SmartXide DOT™ CO2 laser system. This revolutionary technology not only rejuvenates the skin, eliminating wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, acne and other scars but also has the unique ability to tighten skin! It is the preferred method if you wish to get the most results with one treatment.

The SmartXide DOT™ CO2 laser system emits CO2 laser energy that creates thousands of microscopic perforations (vaporization of the skin) at a controlled depth. This stimulates new collagen growth and promotes tissue coagulation, resulting in skin tightening. Its fractional nature leaves bridges of skin between the vaporized columns of tissue. This helps with the healing process by reducing recovery time and associated risks (particularly unwanted hypo-pigmentation), thereby allowing the skin to heal faster. It is important to keep in mind that this technology is not only used for severe skin issues, in fact some clients simply feel their appearance looks aged and tired.

This is an in-office procedure that requires pre and post-treatment medications to ensure proper healing and comfort during the procedure.  For your comfort during the treatment, we may apply a topical freezing anesthetic. After the first day your skin will be extremely red and it is very important to follow the post-treatment instructions given to you by Dr. Vassiliou. Upon leaving you will be asked to book a follow-up appointment.

During the first 24 hours post-treatment use ice/cold packs every two hours for 20 minutes maximum for selling and discomfort, cover treated areas with a moisturizing ointment every two hours, and keep your head elevated by using two or more pillows when lying down.

Following treatment normal activities may resume per level of comfort. However, no swimming or using hot tubs/whirlpools while redness is present, usually for at least 24-48 hours. Once you feel comfortable and healed, a normal skin care regime, including makeup or shaving, can be resumed. Mild treatments typically require 1-2 days of downtime (ideally with 3-5 treatments), moderate treatments require 3-5 days (ideally with 2-3 treatments) and more aggressive treatments require 5-7 days of downtime (ideally with 1-2 treatments).

If you would like to improve the look and feel of your skin this treatment may be for you! Contact us today to book your consultation with Dr. Vassiliou to receive a quote and see if this procedure is right for you.

What is Vibradermabrasion?

Monday, July 7th, 2014

Vibradermabrasion is the latest in skin care technology. It is an effective and clinically proven topical skin treatment, utilizing a rapidly vibrating sterile paddle to remove layers of damaged skin tissue; leaving healthier and more radiant skin. Vibradermabrasion is the new way to do microdermabrasion. The process is fast, very comfortable for patients and produces exceptional results. 75-85% of the stratum corneum (top layer of non-living skin cells) is removed in minutes.

Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic uses Vibradermabrasion to treat:vibra 3

 Sun damaged skin
 Fine lines/wrinkles
 Superficial age spots
 Hyper-pigmentation/Melasma
 Poor skin texture/dull skin

Unlike traditional microdermabrasion, Vibraderm does not sandblast aluminum oxide crystals over the skin. Instead, a Vibraderm machine
consists of paddles covered in abrasive particles. During the treatment, the Vibraderm paddles vibrate over the skin at extremely high speeds, exfoliating the top layer of skin and stimulating collagen growth.

Treatments typically take less than 30 minutes to perform and require virtually no downtime. This makes Vibraderm easy to fit into busy vibra 2schedules and ensures that people can get back to their active lifestyles. Many patients prefer Vibraderm simply for its lack of post-treatment redness.

Vibradermabrasion creates immediate results after just one treatment and in as few as three, initiates the creation of new collagen, leaving the skin more beautiful and vibrant each time. You will immediately notice a textural difference and a glowing quality to your skin’s appearance, however multiple treatments will be required to address hyper-pigmentation, enlarged pores and reduction of fine lines. Results may vary for each patient.

At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic each session is $150 and offers a half an hour of powerful relaxation while we rejuvenate your skin. Post treatment we are happy to match and apply mineral foundation by Jane Iredale that is also available for purchase while in our clinic. Contact us today to book your appointment!

Preventative Use of Botox

Monday, June 9th, 2014

47e39d33a242e12ddd11fdc9bfecee4fIs it too early for Botox? The question of when to start isn’t as straightforward as you may think. It depends on your facial structure and your predisposition for wrinkling. Many of our patients wait for the first signs of wrinkles to occur before treatment. However, Botox is becoming increasingly popular among 20-something men and women as a means of preventing their youthful skin from aging.

By using Botox earlier in life, you will keep lines from forming. Creases become etched in our skin over time as we make the same expressions.  If you receive Botox, you can reduce muscle movement in wrinkle-prone areas before the deep lines appear.  If you have dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that occur when you animate) then using Botox will help prevent the formation of static wrinkles (wrinkles that occur even at rest.)

Don’t forget, to prevent fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots daily use of sunscreen is an absolute must for everyone at every age. Nature’s Veil, SPF 30 is a broad spectrum physical sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays with micronized titanium and zinc oxides that offer no chemicals, fragrance, or parabens. It’s fortified with antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E, Ferulic acid ester and melanin for enhanced protection. For a full line of our products please click here.

Keep in mind, Botox studies have not been completed on anyone younger than the age of 18, and is not recommended for pregnant women. If you’re thinking of getting Botox but aren’t sure it’s right for you, come visit Dr. Vassiliou for a no pressure, honest, and accurate consultation. We deliver beautiful, natural results every time. Contact us today!
