Neck Rejuvenation

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

neckAs we age many of us suffer from a very common aesthetic problem— loosening and discoloration of our neck. Increased wrinkling, laxity, and discoloration of the neck can make us age faster then we’d like. The causes of this are usually multi-factorial and may include hereditary predisposition, excess sun exposure, smoking, excessive drinking, weight loss and weight gain. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic, we have a few options to treat this problem.

One of the more common techniques and procedures involves our Fractional C02 laser. Under topical anesthesia this laser is used to treat the loose skin and wrinkles of the neck by sending tiny beams of light into the damaged area producing new collagen and elastin while helping with anti-pigmentation and immediate tightening of the neck laxity. There are a few things to note when choosing this as a treatment. Generally, the Fractional C02 treatment is completed in under an hour but will yield mild to significant downtime. Depending on the aggressiveness of your treatment you may need anywhere from two to ten days off of work. Your skin may feel sensitive and have a red pigmented and swollen appearance. This laser can provide significant improvement in the appearence and quality of neck rejuvenation. To learn more about how our Fractional CO2 laser works, click here.

Other treatments that can be combined with Fractional C02 include dermal fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic/ Dysport®. When performed properly, patients receive instant gratification with fillers. Dermal fillers work by plumping up the area around the injection site giving you a more youthful appearance. They can be done within half an hour, and offer minimal down time. You’ll be asked to come in half an hour prior to your appointment to have the area being treated frozen with a topical cream. Fillers are temporary, meaning they will degrade or be absorbed over time. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have compositions that offer results ranging between eight to twelve months. If you were choosing to pair dermal fillers with Fractional C02, dermal fillers would be done after you recovered from your laser treatment.

BOTOX® Cosmetic/ Dysport® may be used to soften the neck lines that appear. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are neuromodulators that have the Filler27FrontalBeforeAfterability to temporarily relax muscles, limiting their ability to fully contract, and effectively smooth and reduce the appearance of lines. While both products share the active ingredient botulinum toxin, the protein structure is slightly different in Dysport®. There is no downtime associated with this procedure, and results can be expected to last anywhere between three-four months. Both treatments yield a very similar anti-aging results. At the time of your consultation, Dr. Vassiliou will discuss which option is right for you.

With the holiday season quickly approaching there’s no better time than now to seek treatment! You may feel overwhelmed with your choices, but not to worry. At the time of your consultation Dr. Vassiliou will be able to develop a treatment plan for you and decide what treatments will be the most effective. The Madonna Eye Lift

Thursday, November 6th, 2014

fractional eyeAt Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic we offer one of the most effective laser skin technologies in the industry– Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing with Dermal Optical Thermolysis (DOT) Therapy using the SmartXide DOT™ CO2 laser system. This revolutionary technology  not only rejuvenates the skin, eliminating wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, stretch marks, acne, and other scars but also has the unique ability to perform a fractional eye lift known as The Madonna. This is a non-surgical alternative to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and lift the eyebrow for a younger look to the eye. The Madonna Lift improves drooping skin, wrinkles, and those telltale signs of aging around the eyes. This fractional CO2 laser technology has been used to perform a host of functions, including skin resurfacing and the treatment of acne scars. Now it can give men and women a younger look by rejuvenating the skin around your eyes including the eyelids.

Using DOT Therapy, only a fraction of the skin is treated at a time. This advanced CO2 laser uses specially modulated beams of light to penetrate into the skin. These beams of light, about the width of a human hair, destroy and contract the old collagen within the wrinkles. As a result, the body’s natural wound healing process creates new, youthful collagen in the skin plumping and tightening the wrinkles around the eyes. Wrinkles and pigmentation are eliminated during a Madonna Lift, and the skin is tightened. A study of over 300 patients showed consistent, satisfying results from the fractional eyelift – including reduced dark circles, elimination of eye wrinkles, and tighter eyelid skin.

If you have any of the following cosmetic problems, a Madonna Lift may be right for you:

  • Wrinkles around the eyes
  • Loose eyelid skin
  • Crow’s feet
  • Dark circles
  • Drooping eyebrows

At Dermaworks, your safety is our number one priority. During the treatment, your eyes will be entirely covered with protective shields allowing for safe treatment of the lids and brow area. The fractional laser works well on darker skin in most cases. However, to be safe, we will perform a test spot on the eyelid area to ensure there is no change in pigmentation. The only issue that a Madonna Lift cannot address is bulging fat pads in the eye area. Results will be seen immediately and continue to improve in the coming months.  The number of treatments needed will vary from person to person, but typically three to five treatments is necessary with treatments spaced 4-12 weeks apart.

The Madonna Lift is an in-office procedure that requires pre and post-treatment medications to ensure proper healing and comfort during the procedure. Prior to the treatment, we will apply a topical freezing anesthetic. After the first day your skin may be extremely red and it’s very important to follow the post-treatment instructions given to you by Dr. Vassiliou. Upon leaving you will be asked to book a two week follow-up appointment.

The Madonna lift is relatively non-invasive, painless procedure that can offer younger looking eyes after just a few treatment sessions. If you’re interested in this must have procedure, contact us today to meet with our experienced physician, Dr. Demetra Vassiliou to find out if this treatment is right for you.

Melasma Facts and Treatment

Before and After Fractional C02 Laser Skin Resurfacing

Noticed any brownish or yellowish patches of skin on your face? What you’re seeing in the mirror could be melasma. This skin condition presents as a darkening around the eyes, forehead, bridge of nose, and cheeks. Melasma is a common skin disorder that affects an estimated six million people in the United States. In fact, 90% of those afflicted are women, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Melasma is often associated with sun exposure but it’s also common in pregnant women, hence the nickname the “mask of pregnancy.” Other common triggers include estrogen supplements and birth control pills.

Four types of pigmentation patterns are diagnosed in melasma: epidermal, dermal, mixed, and an unnamed type found in dark-complexioned individuals. The epidermal type is identified by the presence of excess melanin in the superficial layers of skin. Dermal melasma is distinguished by the presence of melanophages (cells that ingest melanin) throughout the dermis. The mixed type includes both the epidermal and dermal type. In the fourth type, excess melanocytes are present in the skin of dark-skinned individuals.

In conjunction with Dermaworks skincare products, non-invasive, in-office treatments include chemical peels, vibradermabrasion, fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing, and laser skin treatments. Melasma is readily diagnosed by recognizing the typical appearance of brown skin patches on the face. During your initial consultation, Dr. Vassiliou will diagnose melasma by visually examining the skin and determine the appropriate treatment.

During a chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied to the skin and allowed to soak in. Over the next 1 to 14 days, depending on how deeply the chemical penetrated the skin, the skin peels off. This procedure removes parts of the skin in a controlled way so that new skin can grow in its place.

Vibradermabrasion is an effective and clinically proven topical skin treatment, utilizing a rapidly vibrating sterile paddle to remove layers of damaged skin tissue; leaving healthier and more radiant skin. Vibradermabrasion is the new way to do microdermabrasion. The process is fast, very comfortable for patients and produces exceptional results. 75-85% of the stratum corneum (top layer of non-living skin cells) is removed in minutes with no down time.

Before and After

SmartXide Fractional CO2 is an excellent treatment for patients who wish to rejuvenate their skin without the lengthy recovery periods inherent in more invasive surgical procedures. Dr. Vassiliou is an expert in fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing and can provide you with the expertise to rejuvenate your skin without invasive surgery helping diminish your skin discoloration.

Laser skin treatment has helped millions of people target their hyperpigmentation problems. The laser emits a beam of light that is absorbed by melanin (pigment) in the skin breaking down the melanin in the skin removing the pigmented lesion (melasma). Final treatment results should be evident 10-21 days for pigmented lesions and sunscreen must be worn after the treatment.

On top of treatment, Dr. Vassiliou will also go over products from our line of medical grade skincare that are proven to lighten and brighten the skin. The following products are suitable for aiding in the fight against melasma.

Before                                         After

At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic we offer one of the most effective laser skin technologies in the industry– Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing with Dermal Optical Thermolysis (DOT) Therapy using the SmartXide DOT™ CO2 laser system. This revolutionary technology not only rejuvenates the skin, eliminating wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, acne and other scars but also has the unique ability to tighten skin! It is the preferred method if you wish to get the most results with one treatment.

The SmartXide DOT™ CO2 laser system emits CO2 laser energy that creates thousands of microscopic perforations (vaporization of the skin) at a controlled depth. This stimulates new collagen growth and promotes tissue coagulation, resulting in skin tightening. Its fractional nature leaves bridges of skin between the vaporized columns of tissue. This helps with the healing process by reducing recovery time and associated risks (particularly unwanted hypo-pigmentation), thereby allowing the skin to heal faster. It is important to keep in mind that this technology is not only used for severe skin issues, in fact some clients simply feel their appearance looks aged and tired.

This is an in-office procedure that requires pre and post-treatment medications to ensure proper healing and comfort during the procedure.  For your comfort during the treatment, we may apply a topical freezing anesthetic. After the first day your skin will be extremely red and it is very important to follow the post-treatment instructions given to you by Dr. Vassiliou. Upon leaving you will be asked to book a follow-up appointment.

During the first 24 hours post-treatment use ice/cold packs every two hours for 20 minutes maximum for selling and discomfort, cover treated areas with a moisturizing ointment every two hours, and keep your head elevated by using two or more pillows when lying down.

Following treatment normal activities may resume per level of comfort. However, no swimming or using hot tubs/whirlpools while redness is present, usually for at least 24-48 hours. Once you feel comfortable and healed, a normal skin care regime, including makeup or shaving, can be resumed. Mild treatments typically require 1-2 days of downtime (ideally with 3-5 treatments), moderate treatments require 3-5 days (ideally with 2-3 treatments) and more aggressive treatments require 5-7 days of downtime (ideally with 1-2 treatments).

What is Vibradermabrasion?

Monday, July 7th, 2014

Vibradermabrasion is the latest in skin care technology. It is an effective and clinically proven topical skin treatment, utilizing a rapidly vibrating sterile paddle to remove layers of damaged skin tissue; leaving healthier and more radiant skin. Vibradermabrasion is the new way to do microdermabrasion. The process is fast, very comfortable for patients and produces exceptional results. 75-85% of the stratum corneum (top layer of non-living skin cells) is removed in minutes.

Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic uses Vibradermabrasion to treat:vibra 3

 Sun damaged skin
 Fine lines/wrinkles
 Superficial age spots
 Hyper-pigmentation/Melasma
 Poor skin texture/dull skin

Unlike traditional microdermabrasion, Vibraderm does not sandblast aluminum oxide crystals over the skin. Instead, a Vibraderm machine
consists of paddles covered in abrasive particles. During the treatment, the Vibraderm paddles vibrate over the skin at extremely high speeds, exfoliating the top layer of skin and stimulating collagen growth.

Treatments typically take less than 30 minutes to perform and require virtually no downtime. This makes Vibraderm easy to fit into busy vibra 2schedules and ensures that people can get back to their active lifestyles. Many patients prefer Vibraderm simply for its lack of post-treatment redness.

Vibradermabrasion creates immediate results after just one treatment and in as few as three, initiates the creation of new collagen, leaving the skin more beautiful and vibrant each time. You will immediately notice a textural difference and a glowing quality to your skin’s appearance, however multiple treatments will be required to address hyper-pigmentation, enlarged pores and reduction of fine lines. Results may vary for each patient.

At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic each session is $150 and offers a half an hour of powerful relaxation while we rejuvenate your skin. Post treatment we are happy to match and apply mineral foundation by Jane Iredale that is also available for purchase while in our clinic. Contact us today to book your appointment!

More About Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing treatment with DOT (Dermal Optical Thermolysis) Therapy is the newest addition to the services we offer at our clinic, and you can get 10% of the procedure if you book now at (613) 667-9455 or by email!

According to Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, MD, phD, assistant clinical professor at Yale University School of Medicine, “the emergence of ablative fractional CO2 is one of the most important advances in laser and light-based aesthetic medicine since traditional CO2 laser resurfacing. It is the culmination of more than 15 years of clinical experience and research.”

Our CO2 laser device is a revolutionary new laser that combines the long standing effectiveness of the CO2 laser with fractional technology to deliver a gentle yet powerful nonsurgical treatment that safely revitalizes the skin. It can resurface the skin as well as rejuvenate collagen production in a uniform and homogenous treatment.

About the procedure
The procedure is performed at the Dermaworks clinic. A topical anesthetic can be applied beforehand to ease discomfort. The area to be treated is defined and then cleaned with alcohol (males patients may need to have the area shaved). After the skin has dried completely, the area is exposed to the mobile and compact CO2 laser device, which operates on 110 volts.

The intensity of the laser, pulse width, and the spacing of fractional beams may be adjusted according to the type of problem and patient. It may even be customized to make it more compatible to a patient’s lifestyle. For example, if a patient is able to reserve some time for recovery, the intensity of the laser may be increased to achieve more dramatic results in a single session. For those with a hectic schedule, “lunch hour” treatments can be milder. Intensity may also vary in a single session, increasing aggressiveness in areas that require deeper correction. Needless to say, the more aggressive a procedure is, the longer the recovery.

One of the most popular laser skin rejuvenation treatments in the medical aesthetics field, fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing has the ability to target a number of cosmetic problems afflicting facial skin, including wrinkles and creases, lax skin around the eyes, and uneven pigmentation. It can also reduce the appearance of scars by addressing discolouration and texture irregularities.

CO2 lasers have long been considered the highest standard of skin laser resurfacing technology. While it has been around for well over a decade, the technology has evolved to improve effectiveness while at the same time dramatically reducing the negative side effects that have been traditionally associated with the procedure. Gone are the extensive recovery periods, chance of permanent hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin), and other possible complications following each treatment – thanks to the fractional nature of today’s state of the art CO2 laser.

fractionatedco2laser

The fractional CO2 laser for laser skin resurfacing emits pulses of scattered beams at a high intensity across the surface of the target area. Each tiny beam perforates the skin and ablates (vaporize) tissue, which induces immediate skin tightening and facilitates the growth of collagen, the building block of healthy youthful skin.

This unique technology achieves remarkable results after one or two sessions (unlike other similar treatments that require far more) and avoids resulting in undesirable hypopigmentation. The bridges of skin between the vaporized columns of tissue help with the healing process and reduce the healing time and risk of complications. Except for full Co2 resurfacing, which can be risky, there is no other laser that is as effective in reducing wrinkles. Downtime ranges from 2 to 7 days, depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment.
