Here Are Some Melasma Facts and Treatments

malasma-before-and-after

Noticed any brownish or yellowish patches of skin on your face? What you’re seeing in the mirror could be melasma. This skin condition presents as a darkening around the eyes, forehead, bridge of nose, and cheeks. This is a common skin disorder that affects an estimated six million people in the United States. In fact, 90% of those afflicted are women, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. It is often associated with sun exposure but it’s also common in pregnant women, hence the nickname the “mask of pregnancy.” Other common triggers include estrogen supplements and birth control pills.

Four types of pigmentation patterns are diagnosed in melasma: epidermal, dermal, mixed, and an unnamed type found in dark-complexioned individuals. The epidermal type is identified by the presence of excess melanin in the superficial layers of skin. Dermal melasma is distinguished by the presence of melanophages (cells that ingest melanin) throughout the dermis. The mixed type includes both the epidermal and dermal type. In the fourth type, excess melanocytes are present in the skin of dark-skinned individuals.

In conjunction with Dermaworks skincare products, non-invasive, in-office treatments include chemical peels, vibradermabrasion, fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing, and laser skin treatments. Melasma is readily diagnosed by recognizing the typical appearance of brown skin patches on the face. During your initial consultation, our physician will diagnose this condition by visually examining the skin and determine the appropriate treatment.

During a chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied to the skin and allowed to soak in. Over the next 1 to 14 days, depending on how deeply the chemical penetrated the skin, the skin peels off. This procedure removes parts of the skin in a controlled way so that new skin can grow in its place.

Vibradermabrasion is an effective and clinically proven topical skin treatment, utilizing a rapidly vibrating sterile paddle to remove layers of damaged skin tissue; leaving healthier and more radiant skin. Vibradermabrasion is the new way to do microdermabrasion. The process is fast, very comfortable for patients and produces exceptional results. 75-85% of the stratum corneum (top layer of non-living skin cells) is removed in minutes with no down time.

Final treatment results should be evident 10-21 days for pigmented lesions and sunscreen must be worn after the treatment.

BOTOX® Cosmetic/ Dysport and Depression

Is paralyzing the muscles involved in frowning truly enough to make depressed patients feel better? The notion that your expression can exert a powerful influence on your mood has us all thinking. After all, we smile because we feel happy, and cry because we feel sad, not the other way around, right? Well, not necessarily. New research suggests that it is possible to treat depression by paralyzing key facial muscles with BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport.

happycoupleIn a study in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, our physicianEric Finzi, a cosmetic dermatologist, and  our physicianNorman Rosenthal, a professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School, randomly assigned a group of 74 patients with major depression to receive either BOTOX® Cosmetic or saline injections in the forehead muscles whose contraction makes it possible to frown. Six weeks after the injection, 52 percent of the subjects who received BOTOX® Cosmetic showed relief from depression, compared with only 15 percent of those who received the saline placebo.

Other studies over the past several years have found similar effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic/ Dysport on individual’s moods. Michael Lewis at Cardiff University reported that non-depressed patients at a cosmetic dermatology clinic receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic injections above the eyes frowned less and felt better than those who did not receive this injection.

The idea that facial expressions may feed information back to our brain and influence our feelings goes back to a theory of emotion first proposed by Charles Darwin. In “The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals,” Darwin explained that the control of facial expression causes a like effect on subjective emotions. William James took the idea further and proposed that emotions were the result, not the cause, of various bodily sensations, suggesting that “we feel sorry because we cry, angry because we strike, afraid because we tremble, and not that we cry, strike, or tremble, because we are sorry, angry, or fearful, as the case may be.”

The BOTOX® Cosmetic studies, by contrast, suggest a circuit between the brain and the muscles of facial expression in which the brain
monitors the emotional valence of the face and responds by generating the appropriate feeling. Of course information flows in both directions, as you can think yourself into practically any emotional state and have the facial expression to match it.

Whether Botox will prove to be an effective and useful antidepressant, it is still unclear. To discuss whether or not BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport is right for you, please contact us for your consultation with our physican. Don’t worry, be happy with BOTOX® Cosmetic/ Dysport.

Anti-Aging Antioxidants– What You Should Know

orange-juice_1When it comes to anti-aging ingredients, the research is abundantly clear– antioxidants reign supreme. Not only do antioxidants combat the free-radical damage that is responsible for the visible (and hidden) signs of aging, they also enhance the effectiveness of sunscreens in preventing sun damage. Indeed, during the day, the combination of antioxidants plus sun protection is a strong defense against many signs of aging, including wrinkles, dullness, and discoloration. At night, dosing your skin with a range of antioxidants will promote cellular repair and healing.

There are hundreds of trendy antioxidants that show up in skincare lines, but antioxidants don’t need to be exotic or have a good marketing story to work brilliantly. Despite what marketers may claim about Tibetan berries or about melons harvested at dawn in the south of France, what matters most is treating your skin to a variety of antioxidants. That’s why Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic takes a cocktail approach!

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that works particularly well for treating wrinkles, dullness, and brown spots. This vitamin is considered an anti-aging superstar. When applied, vitamin C increase collagen production (including dermal collagen, which is significant in the fight against wrinkles) it also reduces skin discolorations, strengthens the skin’s barrier response, enhances skin’s repair process, reduces inflammation, and helps skin better withstand exposure to sunlight, whether protected by sunscreen or not. Amazing right?

Vitamin E is another well-known antioxidant that provides significant benefits to the skin. Vitamin E works in several different ways to protect cell membranes from oxidative damage and from the early stages of ultraviolet light damage. It also works in powerful synergy with vitamin C; that is, our powerful cocktails that contain both vitamins C and E are doubly as beneficial!

Ferulic Acid is also found in our products and has been demonstrated to be an antioxidant extender. Vitamin C is very problematic in skin care due to its highly oxidative state.  There are several factors that must be controlled for topical Vitamin C to be effective.  One of those factors is stabilization once it’s exposed to air, or moisture, where Vitamin C quickly oxidizes. Ferulic Acid does just that. Combined with vitamin C it works to stabilize the vitamin, preventing the oxidation and delivering you better, longer lasting results!

When it comes to treating your skin to antioxidants, remember the old saying “Strength in numbers.” When the antioxidants described above are combined and working together, and reinforced with daily use of sunscreen, the results are remarkable! Trust us.

Laser Skin Treatment for Spider Veins

nosebefore

To the majority of us spider veins are cosmetically undesirable and can make the face appear older, flushed, or blemished. Spider veins are a common development from sun damage and aging. Certain medical conditions and habits (smoking and alcohol) can also promote their development. This type of vascular lesion is formed by abnormally large or numerous blood vessels located directly under the surface of the skin. These vessels may be visible through the skin or result in a red appearance of the skin and can be eliminated with laser skin treatment.

Spider veins usually take on one of three basic patterns. They may appear in a true spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a dark central point; they may be absorbing and will resemble tiny branch-like shapes; or they may be simple linear and appear as thin separate lines. During your treatment the laser used will emit a beam of light that is absorbed by melanin (pigment) in the skin and blood in the vessel. This will either break down the melanin or collapse the blood vessel, getting rid of pigmented lesions. Typically one to four treatment is needed for facial spider veins.

The treatment is fast and simple and typically offers no down time. Patients can resume normal activities almost immediately after having this procedure done. There can be some redness which usually goes away in two to three hours and swelling, if any, may last one to two days. Final treatment results should be evident within 10-14 days for this type of vascular lesion.  Clients should note that sun screen must be worn after the treatment but not to worry, Dermaworks Medical Aesthetic Clinic offers a fabulous sun screen, Nature’s Veil, available for purchase at the time of your appointment.

Laser skin treatment is amazing medical technology that has helped millions of people completely eliminate their facial spider veins. You could be next. Contact us today to book your consultation with our physician.

Lip Augmentation Using Dermal Filler

Lip Filler

For many of us the thought of lip augmentation immediately bombards our thoughts with the negative stereotype associated with it. You  know what I’m talking about, those unnatural, over-sized lips no one would want. Ladies, it’s time to put those stereotypes aside and seriously consider this non-invasive cosmetic procedure!  At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic, our physician knows that an overfilled, over-corrected lip never looks good. Her goal in lip augmentation is to give subtle, enhanced body to your lips, adding to the natural shape and size of your face.

At the time of your appointment, we will apply a topical freezing to the area being treated. our physician will then inject the filler into the lip area, instantly restoring your lip volume and smoothing away fine lines. This treatment can be done in as little as a half an hour and offers minimal downtown. After the treatment you may resume your regular activities. Keep in mind there may be mild swelling in the lips for a few days following the treatment.

When using Hyaluronic Acid injectables such as JUVÉDERM®, treatment generally lasts six to eights months. This is because the lips move more than any other facial component, and this causes the body to break down the filler more rapidly. Your lips will not look strange or deflated during this process. They will simply resume their previous shape and size.

Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring sugar type substances found in our bodies that help to hydrate and add volume to your skin. In addition to their use as an aesthetic treatment, Hyaluronic Acid gels have also been used for more than 20 years for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement as well as for eye surgeries and wound repair.

Lip AugmentationThe lips are a central feature of the face. Natural and attractive-looking lips have much to do with the contour, volume and relative difference between the upper and lower lips. A key characteristic of beautiful lips is that they have a harmonious appearance and blend well with the rest of your face. For this reason it is sometimes recommended that one combines lip augmentation with other facial cosmetic treatments.

The characteristic and shape of the lips can be easily adjusted using dermal fillers. We create genuine-looking lips that maintain their natural feel. Whatever your situation, our physician will work with you to determine the most beneficial treatment available. Contact us today!

What is Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing?

CO2-Laser-before-970763-1560461

At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic we offer one of the most effective laser skin technologies in the industry–Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing with Dermal Optical Thermolysis (DOT) Therapy using the SmartXide DOT™ CO2 laser system. This revolutionary technology not only rejuvenates the skin, eliminating wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, acne and other scars but also has the unique ability to tighten skin! It is the preferred method if you wish to get the most results with one treatment.

The SmartXide DOT™ CO2 laser system emits CO2 laser energy that creates thousands of microscopic perforations (vaporization of the skin) at a controlled depth. This stimulates new collagen growth and promotes tissue coagulation, resulting in skin tightening. Its fractional nature leaves bridges of skin between the vaporized columns of tissue. This helps with the healing process by reducing recovery time and associated risks (particularly unwanted hypo-pigmentation), thereby allowing the skin to heal faster. It is important to keep in mind that this technology is not only used for severe skin issues, in fact some clients simply feel their appearance looks aged and tired.

This is an in-office procedure that requires pre and post-treatment medications to ensure proper healing and comfort during the procedure.  For your comfort during the treatment, we may apply a topical freezing anesthetic. After the first day your skin will be extremely red and it is very important to follow the post-treatment instructions given to you by our physician. Upon leaving you will be asked to book a follow-up appointment.

During the first 24 hours post-treatment use ice/cold packs every two hours for 20 minutes maximum for selling and discomfort, cover treated areas with a moisturizing ointment every two hours, and keep your head elevated by using two or more pillows when lying down.

CO2-Laser-after-970763-1560462

Following treatment normal activities may resume per level of comfort. However, no swimming or using hot tubs/whirlpools while redness is present, usually for at least 24-48 hours. Once you feel comfortable and healed, a normal skin care regime, including makeup or shaving, can be resumed. Mild treatments typically require 1-2 days of downtime (ideally with 3-5 treatments), moderate treatments require 3-5 days (ideally with 2-3 treatments) and more aggressive treatments require 5-7 days of downtime (ideally with 1-2 treatments).

If you would like to improve the look and feel of your skin this treatment may be for you! Contact us today to book your consultation with our physician to receive a quote and see if this procedure is right for you.

What is Vibradermabrasion for Aging Skin?

Vibradermabrasion is the latest in aging skin treatment technology. It is an effective and clinically proven topical aging skin treatment, utilizing a rapidly vibrating sterile paddle to remove layers of damaged skin tissue; leaving healthier and more radiant skin. Vibradermabrasion is the new way to do microdermabrasion. The process is fast, very comfortable for patients and produces exceptional results. 75-85% of the stratum corneum (top layer of non-living skin cells) is removed in minutes.

Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic uses Vibradermabrasion to treat:vibra 3

 Sun damaged skin
 Fine lines/wrinkles
 Superficial age spots
 Hyper-pigmentation/Melasma
 Poor skin texture/dull skin

Unlike traditional microdermabrasion, Vibraderm does not sandblast aluminum oxide crystals over the skin. Instead, a Vibraderm machine
consists of paddles covered in abrasive particles. During the treatment, the Vibraderm paddles vibrate over the skin at extremely high speeds, exfoliating the top layer of skin and stimulating collagen growth.

Treatments typically take less than 30 minutes to perform and require virtually no downtime. This makes Vibraderm easy to fit into busyvibra 2schedules and ensures that people can get back to their active lifestyles. Many patients prefer Vibraderm simply for its lack of post-treatment redness.

Vibradermabrasion creates immediate results for aging skin after just one treatment and in as few as three, initiates the creation of new collagen, leaving the skin more beautiful and vibrant each time. You will immediately notice a textural difference and a glowing quality to your skin’s appearance, however multiple treatments will be required to address hyper-pigmentation, enlarged pores and reduction of fine lines. Results may vary for each patient.

At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic each session is $150 and offers a half an hour of powerful relaxation while we rejuvenate your aging skin. Post treatment we are happy to match and apply mineral foundation by Jane Iredale that is also available for purchase while in our clinic. Contact us today to book your appointment!

Will Botox Between the Eyebrows Cause Bunny Lines?

507430-448893You may have read in celebrity gossip magazines that visible “bunny lines” (the lines that form below the inside of the eyes and near the top of the nose) are tell-tale signs of Botox between the eyebrows (good example is Nicole Kidman) but is this really true?

Luckily, the horizontal nasal lines, as seen in the picture of Nicole Kidman, are not automatically caused by Botox injected between the eyebrows. One reason this happens is that men and women who receive Botox injections in the frown lines between the eyebrows (or around crow’s feet) are forced to use other muscles to make facial expressions. This can result in more use of nasal muscles in order to smile so the increased stress on the facial tissue simply moves to another region and causes new wrinkles to appear.

However sometimes lines on the nose are already there but when the areas surrounding them become smoother and less noticeable we have a heightened awareness of other areas we may not have noticed before. Many people contract the muscles of the nose as part of regular facial expressions, smiling or squinting–it is not a telltale sign of Botox.

Bunny lines sound cute, but the name is the only good thing about them. Most of the time, they are created by hyperactivity of the nasalis muscles when smiling or laughing.  They get the name “bunny lines” because they are formed by twitching the muscles of the nose.   These wrinkles may be vertical, horizontal or form diagonally but they appear in the same place on either side of the nose.

Before and After Botox for Bunny Lines

The good news is that bunny lines are easy to treat – using Botox!  Just a small amount of this neuro-toxin will help to relax the nasal muscles existing lines as well as stop new creases from occurring.  Bunny lines are often very small and shallow so only a small bit of Botox is needed.

As with all of our medical procedures, they are physician administered by our physician who consistently supplies beautiful, natural looking results! Contact us to book your appointment today!
