A youthful appearance depends on the lack of fine lines and sagging creases. However, it is essential to remember that, although a multitude of treatments exist to help correct aging skin, it is far easier to prevent wrinkles than it is to treat them.

3 Easy and Effective Ways to Prevent Wrinkles

Wear Sunscreen: The simplest way to fight signs of aging is to wear sunscreen every day. Even in winter, when skies are cloudy and grey, UV rays can harm your skin, causing skin damage and hyper-pigmentation. Incorporate a formula enhanced with antioxidants into your daily routine to protect your skin and enhance your complexion.

Use medical grade skincare: Choosing the right skincare products can be challenging. Look for products with preventative ingredients and formulas that are scientifically proven to improve the look of your skin over time.

Renew Your Skin with Microdermabrasion or a Chemical Peel: Vibradermabrasion, a next-generation skin-renewal technique, provides results after just one treatment. The treatment improves skin’s tone and texture, reducing the appearance of age spots, acne, scars and even fine lines.  A therapeutic chemical peel will also help to smooth your skin, removing damaged outer layers and creating a more even appearance. A therapeutic peel may also minimize pores and reduce facial blemishes.

How to Rejuvenate Your Skin After Signs of Aging Appear

Have you already noticed fine lines around your eyes, or are bothered by the number of dark spots appearing on your face? A wide range of non-surgical skin care procedures exists to help minimize the signs of aging.

Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing, a revolutionary technique that requires fewer treatments and boasts a shorter recovery time, is highly effective at eliminating wrinkles, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, and scars.

If you’re worried about facial lines, BOTOX can help smooth them over. This popular procedure helps eliminates worry lines in the forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes and other signs of aging. Dysport and Xeomin are similar solutions that help treat wrinkled skin.

Volume boosting dermal fillers, including Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero, can help refresh your skin and restore a more youthful appearance.

Neck and Chin Rejuvenation Benefits

neckAs we age many of us suffer from a very common aesthetic problem— loosening and discoloration of our neck and chin. Increased wrinkling, laxity, and discoloration of the neck and chin can make us age faster then we’d like. The causes of this are usually multi-factorial and may include hereditary predisposition, excess sun exposure, smoking, excessive drinking, weight loss and weight gain. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic, we have a few options to treat this problem.

One of the more common techniques and procedures involves our Fractional CO2 laser. Under topical anesthesia this laser is used to treat the loose skin and wrinkles of the neck  and chin by sending tiny beams of light into the damaged area producing new collagen and elastin while helping with anti-pigmentation and immediate tightening of the neck laxity. There are a few things to note when choosing this as a treatment. Generally, the Fractional CO2 treatment is completed in under an hour but will yield mild to significant downtime. Depending on the aggressiveness of your treatment you may need anywhere from two to ten days off of work. Your skin may feel sensitive and have a red pigmented and swollen appearance. This laser can provide significant improvement in the appearence and quality of neck rejuvenation. To learn more about how our Fractional CO2 laser works, click here.

Other treatments that can be combined with Fractional CO2 include dermal fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic/Dysport®. When performed properly, patients receive instant gratification with fillers. Dermal fillers work by plumping up the area around the injection site giving you a more youthful appearance. They can be done within half an hour, and offer minimal down time. You’ll be asked to come in half an hour prior to your appointment to have the area being treated frozen with a topical cream. Fillers are temporary, meaning they will degrade or be absorbed over time. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have compositions that offer results ranging between eight to twelve months. If you were choosing to pair dermal fillers with Fractional CO2, dermal fillers would be done after you recovered from your laser treatment.

BOTOX® Cosmetic/ Dysport® may be used to soften the neck lines that appear. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are neuromodulators that have the Filler27FrontalBeforeAfterability to temporarily relax muscles, limiting their ability to fully contract, and effectively smooth and reduce the appearance of lines. While both products share the active ingredient botulinum toxin, the protein structure is slightly different in Dysport®. There is no downtime associated with this procedure, and results can be expected to last anywhere between three-four months. Both treatments yield a very similar anti-aging results. At the time of your consultation, our physician will discuss which option is right for you.

With the holiday season quickly approaching there’s no better time than now to seek treatment! You may feel overwhelmed with your choices, but not to worry. At the time of your consultation our physician will be able to develop a treatment plan for you and decide what treatments will be the most effective. The Medical Uses of BOTOX ®

BOTOX ® is one of the worlds most popular medical cosmetic treatment. About 20 million treatments are done worldwide annually using this nerve blocker. It is a purified protein injected into the muscles that is best known for treating fine lines and wrinkles, but it has some surprising medical uses as well.

  1. Migraines: Traditionally, migraine headaches have been difficult, if not impossible, to treat in some patients. They’re typically accompanied by a variety of unwelcome symptoms including dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light, and vomiting. While doctors remain uncertain as to exactly how BOTOX ® injections (typically injected into seven areas around the temples, forehead, neck and shoulders) really work to ease the symptoms, the prevailing theory is that it prevents pain signals from reaching nerve endings.
  2. Hyperhidrosis: BOTOX ® is a fabulous treatment option for excessive sweating also known by its medical term, hyperhidrosis. It works by blocking signals the brain sends to sweat glands. BOTOX ® injections are given in affected areas, such as the armpits, hands, feet or face with results typically lasting 8 months.
  3. Eye Twitching: Eye twitching is a repetitive, uncontrollable blinking or spasm of (usually) the upper eyelid. One common treatment recommended for a type of eye twitch called benign essential blepharospasm is BOTOX®. The treatment may relieve spasms for several months.
  4. Essential Tremor: Essential tremor is a nerve disorder causing uncontrollable shaking or tremors affecting different parts of the body. BOTOX® injections have been found to be effective for vocal and head tremors.
  5. Crossed Eyes: With strabismus, also known as crossed eyes or a squint, the eyes don’t look towards an object together. BOTOX® may be injected into one of the eye muscles as a treatment option, usually if a squint develops rapidly without an obvious cause. The injection weakens the injected muscle for a period of time, which lets the eyes realign themselves.

Over the years BOTOX ® has proven to be much more than an appearance enhancing prescription drug. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic we only offer treatment for hyperhidrosis for the underarms. Should you suffer from the four other mentioned conditions you will be required to seek another provider. Contact us today with any questions, or to book your appointment!

Are You Afraid of Needles?

Have you been thinking of having a cosmetic procedure but haven’t taken the leap because your fear of needles? Trust us, you’re not alone. We have hundreds of people walk through the door feeling like that. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic, your comfort and safety is our number one concern. Take these tips and tricks into consideration before your next treatment.

1. Share your fear. Instead of keeping your fear of needles secret and letting it snowball into a full-blown anxiety attack, talk to our physician about it. Let her know about your fear. Expression and social connection often help people calm down. our physician will talk to you about your options and take special precautions to make the process less painful and anxiety-producing.

2. Request a topical anesthetic. Anesthesia is a pain killer, applied onto the skin that will dull the pain of the needle. Although needles only cause a small amount of pain having the anesthetic may help get you through the door!

3. Request cool air. Studies show that blasting cool air on the treated area decreases pain and we have just the machine to do it! Check out The Gate Control Theory.

4. Position your body effectively. For some patients who faint and lose consciousness, lying down and/or elevating the legs can help ease some of the symptoms of needle phobia. This is a serious concern for many people, as people with a needle phobia also report a fear of fainting. In these cases, addressing both the fear of needles and the possibility of fainting is important.

5. Don’t make it a big deal. Don’t think about the needle, or getting the needle. Don’t worry about the size of the needle, and don’t stress over the pain. If you keep stressing over the needle before the procedure, you’re just building up anxiety about it. In the long run, this makes the whole process more uncomfortable.

6. Think about something else. Talk to our physician (she’s a great conservationist!) Think about that party that’s coming up, or that special somebody. If you want, count down in your head; count sheep even. You could try bringing an iPod with you and listening to music to take your mind off the needle.

7. Don’t watch us administer the shot. Look away or close your eyes and try to focus on something engaging.

8. Remember to breathe slowly and deeply. Focus on maintaining your breathing. A slow, steady breath will calm your nerves and give your mind something to latch onto.

Don’t let your fear of needles get you down. Go ahead, get that Botox™, Dysport, filler, or mesotherapy. You’ll thank yourself later. Contact us today to discuss more about your fear, or to book a consultation.

BOTOX® Cosmetic/ Dysport and Depression

Is paralyzing the muscles involved in frowning truly enough to make depressed patients feel better? The notion that your expression can exert a powerful influence on your mood has us all thinking. After all, we smile because we feel happy, and cry because we feel sad, not the other way around, right? Well, not necessarily. New research suggests that it is possible to treat depression by paralyzing key facial muscles with BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport.

happycoupleIn a study in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, our physicianEric Finzi, a cosmetic dermatologist, and  our physicianNorman Rosenthal, a professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School, randomly assigned a group of 74 patients with major depression to receive either BOTOX® Cosmetic or saline injections in the forehead muscles whose contraction makes it possible to frown. Six weeks after the injection, 52 percent of the subjects who received BOTOX® Cosmetic showed relief from depression, compared with only 15 percent of those who received the saline placebo.

Other studies over the past several years have found similar effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic/ Dysport on individual’s moods. Michael Lewis at Cardiff University reported that non-depressed patients at a cosmetic dermatology clinic receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic injections above the eyes frowned less and felt better than those who did not receive this injection.

The idea that facial expressions may feed information back to our brain and influence our feelings goes back to a theory of emotion first proposed by Charles Darwin. In “The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals,” Darwin explained that the control of facial expression causes a like effect on subjective emotions. William James took the idea further and proposed that emotions were the result, not the cause, of various bodily sensations, suggesting that “we feel sorry because we cry, angry because we strike, afraid because we tremble, and not that we cry, strike, or tremble, because we are sorry, angry, or fearful, as the case may be.”

The BOTOX® Cosmetic studies, by contrast, suggest a circuit between the brain and the muscles of facial expression in which the brain
monitors the emotional valence of the face and responds by generating the appropriate feeling. Of course information flows in both directions, as you can think yourself into practically any emotional state and have the facial expression to match it.

Whether Botox will prove to be an effective and useful antidepressant, it is still unclear. To discuss whether or not BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport is right for you, please contact us for your consultation with our physican. Don’t worry, be happy with BOTOX® Cosmetic/ Dysport.

cmf-botox-before-and-afterWomen have long been held to a higher aging standard than men, but it appears as though that gap may be closing. According to a new study, the number of American men getting Botox injections—which relax the facial muscles to minimize lines and wrinkles—has skyrocketed 258 percent over the past decade!

It’s true guys, men are going to lengths once believed only reserved for women to try and gain an edge. Will Botox Between the Eyebrows Cause Bunny Lines?

507430-448893You may have read in celebrity gossip magazines that visible “bunny lines” (the lines that form below the inside of the eyes and near the top of the nose) are tell-tale signs of Botox between the eyebrows (good example is Nicole Kidman) but is this really true?

Luckily, the horizontal nasal lines, as seen in the picture of Nicole Kidman, are not automatically caused by Botox injected between the eyebrows. One reason this happens is that men and women who receive Botox injections in the frown lines between the eyebrows (or around crow’s feet) are forced to use other muscles to make facial expressions. This can result in more use of nasal muscles in order to smile so the increased stress on the facial tissue simply moves to another region and causes new wrinkles to appear.

However sometimes lines on the nose are already there but when the areas surrounding them become smoother and less noticeable we have a heightened awareness of other areas we may not have noticed before. Many people contract the muscles of the nose as part of regular facial expressions, smiling or squinting–it is not a telltale sign of Botox.

Bunny lines sound cute, but the name is the only good thing about them. Most of the time, they are created by hyperactivity of the nasalis muscles when smiling or laughing.  They get the name “bunny lines” because they are formed by twitching the muscles of the nose.   These wrinkles may be vertical, horizontal or form diagonally but they appear in the same place on either side of the nose.

Before and After Botox for Bunny Lines

The good news is that bunny lines are easy to treat – using Botox!  Just a small amount of this neuro-toxin will help to relax the nasal muscles existing lines as well as stop new creases from occurring.  Bunny lines are often very small and shallow so only a small bit of Botox is needed.

As with all of our medical procedures, they are physician administered by our physician who consistently supplies beautiful, natural looking results! Contact us to book your appointment today!

Suffering From Hyperhidrosis? Don’t Sweat It.

hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a condition affecting millions of people around the world. Excessive sweating can affect various parts of the body including the face, hands, feet or underarms. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic we only offer treatment for underarms. Localized sweating problems are generally unrelated to underlying medical conditions. Botox is a long lasting treatment for hyperhidrosis that really works.

botox_injections_varsity_lakes

Unlike topical treatments, Botox targets sweating at its source. our physician injects tiny amounts of Botox into both underarms, skillfully and safely. Botox enters the sweat glands in the underarms responsible for sweating and blocks sweat release. The treatment can be done in a few short minutes.

Patients treated with Botox notice a remarkable improvement in hyperhidrosis symptoms. In clinical studies, 95% of patients with hyperhidrosis that was severe enough to interfere with their daily lives experienced the benefits of Botox after just 1 week, with sweating reduced by an average of 83%!

After the first treatment, the effects of Botox lasts an average of about 7.5 months. For nearly 40% of patients, Botox reduced sweating for more than 1 year. The amount of time Botox remains effective may vary. When your symptoms begin to return, contact us to book another appointment!

Botox has been used successfully to treat a range of medical conditions for many years now. Side effects, if they occur, are temporary. The most common side effects with Botox for this condition is a perceived increase in sweating in areas other than the underarms.

If your underarm sweating is excessive and interferes with work, lifestyle etc., then your Botox treatment may be covered under your private insurance plan. Our Botox is kept on site and there is no need for you to get a prescription and pick it up elsewhere. If you have coverage for Botox we do not require you to pay the full amount at the time of your visit. We will send your forms away and await reimbursement. All we ask is that you pay our physician administering fee, and leave the rest to us.

Hyperhidrosis is a common condition, but not one you need to suffer with anymore. Book your consultation with our physician today and let us help.

Preventative Use of Botox for Wrinkles

47e39d33a242e12ddd11fdc9bfecee4fIs it too early for Botox? The question of when to start isn’t as straightforward as you may think. It depends on your facial structure and your predisposition for wrinkling. Many of our patients wait for the first signs of wrinkles to occur before treatment. However, Botox is becoming increasingly popular among 20-something men and women as a means of preventing their youthful skin from aging.

By using Botox earlier in life, you will keep lines from forming. Creases become etched in our skin over time as we make the same expressions.  If you receive this treatment, you can reduce muscle movement in wrinkle-prone areas before the deep lines appear.  If you have dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that occur when you animate) then using Botox will help prevent the formation of static wrinkles (wrinkles that occur even at rest.)

Don’t forget, to prevent fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots daily use of sunscreen is an absolute must for everyone at every age. Nature’s Veil, SPF 30 is a broad spectrum physical sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays with micronized titanium and zinc oxides that offer no chemicals, fragrance, or parabens. It’s fortified with antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E, Ferulic acid ester and melanin for enhanced protection. For a full line of our products please click here.

Keep in mind, Botox studies have not been completed on anyone younger than the age of 18, and is not recommended for pregnant women. If you’re thinking of getting this treatment but aren’t sure it’s right for you, come visit our physician for a no pressure, honest, and accurate consultation. We deliver beautiful, natural results every time. Contact us today!
