Hand Skin Resurfacing is a MUST!

Hand Rejuvenation

If you take care of your face with great skincare, chemical peels, Botox, fillers and laser resurfacing but neglect your hands then they will give your age away. Multiple options exist for hand rejuvenation from good skincare, chemical peels,  laser and dermal fillers such as Juvederm.

The loss of collagen and hyaluronic acid in our skin makes the texture of our hands change so that they look dry and withered looking. Years of UV exposure lead to age spots and hyperpigmentation. Loss of fat and hyaluronic acid lead to exposure of veins and tendons.

So what can be used to rejuvenate your hands and remove the telltale signs of aging? Dermal fillers, medical grade skincare, chemical peels, and lasers  are options for hand skin resurfacing.

Dermal Fillers for hand skin resurfacing

First, dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, Anteis, Radiesse will bring a youthful volume back. Fillers will fill in the gaps between the tendons and veins so that the hands are no longer old and bony looking. Finer hyaluronic acid injected superficially into the skin, also called mesotherapy will plump up the skin and decrease dryness as the hyaluronic acid pulls water into the skin. The procedure is quick and very effective giving absolutely remarkable hand skin resurfacing results.

Using Dermal Fillers to Correct Dark Circles

Have the dark circles under your eyes been bothering you a lot lately? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Bags under the eyes have been traditionally treated with surgery. Until recently, there wasn’t an effective treatment for the dark circles around the eyes. Today, with dermal fillers such as Juvéderm, our physician can remove your under eye hollows and effectively reduce the dark circles under your eyes naturally without surgery.

under eye

Dark circles under eyes are usually caused by hollowing in the “tear trough” zone due to volume loss caused by loss of fat in this area. This is usually due to age but can be present in much younger people who are genetically predisposed. The dark colour occurs because this loss of tissue allows the deeper dark purple muscle layer to show through. Often a “bag” will appear, as this loss of structure, plus loss of upper cheek volume in more severe cases, causes a loss of support to the tissue structures directly under the eye, which will then begin to bulge unsupported. The darkness is further compounded by the shadowing caused by the troughing and bagging. Pigmentation is usually never a contributing factor, and is why no creams will ever be of any use to help fix this problem.

eye

By adding volume back into the troughs and upper cheeks with dermal fillers, these “valleys” can be filled in to smooth out the negative contours, effectively eliminating the dark colour and shadowing, and erasing the perceived tired look. However, filling this area with injectables is the most difficult of all dermal filling. It is not something you should have done by an inexperienced and unskilled doctor or nurse. Choose your injector very carefully. Due to the thinness of the tissues and skin, the area being extremely prone to bleeding and significant bruising, a tendency to swelling and the close proximity to the eye. However, if done properly, this arguably produces some of the most rewarding results with dermal fillers. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic, our physician has completed many successful under eye injections with amazing results.

While we have a few fillers to choose from, all of our fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body. The role of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding in water, and to act as a cushioning agent. our physician will choose an injectable filler that will have a smooth-consistency which will let the filler flow easily into the skin to provide a smooth, natural look and feel. This is very important when treating under the eye, where other big and bulky fillers may result in puffiness of the eyes.

The treatment is done under local anesthetic using a topical freezing cream. It does not hurt after the anesthetic wears off. Treatment, however, tends to be a little bit more tedious than when treating other zones of the face, simply due to the potential fragility in this area. Some temporary minor bruise or welt spots can sometimes be seen, but could be covered up appropriately with foundation.

How to Rejuvenate the Earlobes

siliconeearsmallHave you noticed that your earlobes aren’t shaped quite as nicely as they once were? Have years of wearing heavy earrings caused them to sag? As many people age, they become concerned with rejuvenating and restoring the youthful appearance of their face, and oftentimes forget about other important areas such as the neck, hands, chest, and ear lobes! Sagging earlobes and stretched out piercings can actually be improved with dermal filler injections. Our expert injector, our physician, can tailor an injectable treatment plan specifically to your needs to firm up and reshape the ears at our Ottawa based office.

A dermal filler such as JUVÉDERM® is injected into the earlobe with a fine needle to add volume to the lobe, smooth out lines and creases, and minimize the appearance of large piercings. JUVÉDERM® is an injectable hyaluronic acid gel that acts as a filler for wrinkles that adds volume to the space where the skin sinks in. JUVÉDERM® has been formulated through HYLACROSS™ technology, creating a smooth-consistency filler. The main ingredient in JUVÉDERM® is hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in our bodies, so the risk of infection and allergic reaction is minimal.  Aside from adding volume to earlobes, JUVÉDERM® is an ideal treatment for laugh lines and is often the treatment of choice for plumping thing lips.

While the injections are generally pain-free, we will apply a topical anesthetic to the lobe prior to injection to minimize discomfort. You may experience ba-cleft-earlobe10_b some redness, swelling, and/or bruising after injection, but this shouldn’t last more than a couple of days. Earlobe rejuvenation results can actually last up to one year or longer in some cases and earrings can be worn like normal after treatment. Dermal filler results last longer in the earlobes because there is no dynamic muscle movement like in the face. Once results do begin to diminish, the earlobe rejuvenation procedure can be performed again.

Gravity, volume loss, and the weight of earrings eventually take a toll on our ears, causing the earlobes to sag and ear piercings to become large and stretched out. People who have stretched their earlobes and wanted them corrected or have an adverse reaction to ear piercing may also find themselves wanting to restore the natural appearance of their ears.

Cheeks Enhancement with Dermal Filler

With age, hallows in the cheeks and bags in the lower eye lids are common. As you get older, skin loses its elasticity and begins to show signs of aging. This leads to loss of shape and definition of the face. Many individuals desire to have fuller, more appealing cheek structure or wish to correct sunken cheeks. Both of these conditions can be treated, non-surgically, with the use of dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can help camouflage bags and add volume to sagging hollow cheeks. They can enhance face contours and have a lifting effect on the face with natural collagen production also being stimulated.

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar that is found in the human skin, one that retains moisture. As we age, the hyaluronic acid in the skin reduces and the skin starts looking aged. Through the use of dermal fillers, the lost hyaluronic acid is restored and this visibly firms up the skin around the cheeks. Once injected into the skin, the fillers plump up and enhance the treated area. The content of the filler combines with the body’s own hyaluronic acid and binds with the water to create increased volume. It will dissolve naturally over time and will show results instantly. The effect of the filler can last from 8-12 months. Since they have a temporary effect, fillers are injected at regular intervals to maintain the firmness.

Upper Cheek Contouring

The zygomatic or malar area of the cheeks is the area of the high cheek bone below the rims of the eyes that extends out to the sides of the face.  The cheek 773009033 bone area is a key treatment zone for many individuals who are seeking a lift in one of several aspects of the face. Over time, skeletal changes, fat loss and collagen depletion will flatten the malar area of the cheeks.  This can accentuate sagging in many areas of the face like the hollows under the eyes, the jowls, and a downward turn of the lips. Depending upon the facial characteristics of the client and personal goals, our physician can give the face a smooth curve or a more defined ‘apple’ effect.  Clients desiring more of an apple-type cheek may require additional filler in the upper portion of the cheek bone area.

Cheek Hollow Contouring

In the area below the cheek bones and out on the flat plane of the face, known as the sub-malar area, fillers can be used to correct a hollowing that occurs fillers-6with age or disease.  Many individuals who have a gaunt look can benefit from fillers in the cheek hollow areas. our physician knows it’s important to seek an experienced physician for this treatment as you need to balance the weight and pull of the fillers in this area with the potential to push the skin upward and outward. Too much can defeat the purpose of the procedure and oppose the effects of the treatment on the cheek bone area. As with all of the techniques, it is important that the physician has developed an understanding of the balance amidst various facial features and among varying skin and skeletal types.  In many instances, these techniques are as much art as science, drawing heavily on the injection experience of the physician. At Dermaworks you can be confident that our physician’s many years of injecting experience will lead to a desirable outcome.

During treatment, dermal fillers are injected using fine needles at the appropriate areas on the cheek. The entire procedure normally lasts no longer than 30 minutes. There is a minimal recovery period involved and often the person resume their daily routine immediately after. Prior to treatment a topical freezing will be applied and minimal discomfort will be felt during the procedure. Soon after there may be some swelling, redness, and very rarely bruising around the treated region; one may sense the filler material under the skin. However, this feeling remains for only few days, until the gel is absorbed into the area and swelling also subsides within a few days after the treatment. A word of caution here– it is best not to exercise prior to or after the treatment and avoid anti-inflammatory drugs for 10 days before the treatment to minimize bruising.

Does Hydrated Skin Mean Healthy Skin?

drinking-water_2694655bWith all the hype on TV and in health magazines, most of us know that drinking the suggested 6-8 cups of water a day is important to our overall well-being. But just how important is water to the feel and look of our skin? Is healthy skin hydrated skin? I’m here to tell you yes! In order for the skin to protect our bodies from UV radiation, microorganisms, and toxic agents, it must be kept adequately hydrated. Hydrated skin will remain flexible and allow our protective barrier to remain intact.

When skin is well-hydrated, it is more plump and resilient. This is due, at least in part, to an ingredient in the skin called hyaluronic acid. The job of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to hold water. When there is adequate water from inside out, the skin looks healthier and more vibrant and is less prone to wrinkles. It is important to drink lots of fluids throughout the day for best results. You’ve probably heard that drinking six to eight glasses of water a day is a good idea but you may need more or less depending on your activity level. Remember, coffee and sodas do not count as water because they contain caffeine which is a diuretic, meaning that they draw water out of your system and your skin.

There are several reasons why you may not be getting enough water to make keep your skin healthy. Anything that makes you sweat a lot, such as exercise or being out in the sun, causes you to loose fluids. Getting sick can dehydrate you too, particularly if you have a fever, diarrhea or are vomiting. In such cases, you might need to drink even more water to replace what was lost. Avoiding excessive alcohol consumption is highly recommended.

Remembering to drink enough water can sometimes be a chore. Our suggestion? Make it a point to drink one or two glasses of water with every meal. Keep a water bottle on your desk at work or in your car, and sip often. If you’d like a little flavor with your water, try adding a lemon wedge or a splash of fruit juice. If you want to do everything you can to moisturize your skin, don’t stop at applying moisturizer and drinking a lot of water. You can make “you are what you eat” your new mantra and choose foods based on how they will help your skin. To get the most out of your daily meals, try including the following items in your diet:Food with unsaturated fats

Omega 3′s– Your skin has a natural barrier to help retain moisture, and that barrier contains omega-3 fatty acids. Try adding flax seed, salmon and walnuts to your diet to boost your omega-3 intake and moisturize your skin.

Spinach- In addition to being chock full of vitamins, such as skin-strengthening vitamin A, spinach has plant compounds that according to some research help to keep your skin healthy.

Berries- It turns out that berries aren’t just tasty and fun to eat; they’re also really good for healing your skin. Berries not only contain juice to help you hydrate, but they’ve also got antioxidants and vitamin C that protect your skin.

Overall, drinking plenty of water, eating a variety of healthy foods, and watching your caffeine and alcohol intake will put you on the road to healthy, moist, and supple skin. Hyaluronic Acid for Wrinkles and Lines

skinIf you want to reduce facial wrinkles and lines, hyaluronic acid may be a good choice because of its compatibility with the human body. In fact, this substance is found in almost every single living thing. In humans, it acts as a network that transfers essential nutrients from the bloodstream to skin cells.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in your body. High concentrations are found in soft connective tissues and in the fluid surrounding your eyes. It’s also in some cartilage and joint fluids, as well as skin tissue. It is extracted and reformulated and now has become one of the most popular kinds of injectable fillers. If the term sounds familiar, it’s because the same substance is often injected into the aching joints of people with arthritis to ease pain and provide extra cushioning. Brand names include Captique, Esthélis, Elevess, Hylaform, Juvéderm, Perlane, Prevelle, Puragen and Restylane. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic we offer  Esthélis and Juvéderm. Hyaluronic acid is not derived from animal sources.

When this gel is injected, it acts like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging, which is what causes wrinkles and lines. It also brings water to the surface of skin to keep it looking fresh and supple.

In the last few decades, various synthetic forms of hyaluronic acid have been developed and used to correct disorders in the fields of rheumatology, ophthalmology, and wound repair. More recently, synthetic forms of hyaluronic acid are being manufactured for use in face augmentation, including correcting wrinkles and lines from aging.

Botox, Dysport, and Fillers: What You Can Expect

Many of us have heard of Botox and dermal fillers but the question now is what can you expect from each of these procedures? How long until you see results and how long will these effects last? Botox, Dysport, and dermal fillers have the ability to provide quick and effective results. At Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic in Ottawa we offer simple, non-surgical solutions for facial wrinkles and lines.

Botox/ Dysport

botox-4

Botox and Dysport can be done in a few short minutes and offers no down time. Tiny red dots will appear with minimal to no swelling for up to a half an hour after your appointment. Most patients will see the results of their injections begin to work between 5-7 days of having them done and continue to improve until approximately two weeks. Effect will gradually wear off over the next 3-4 months. Once the effects begin, the areas treated, i.e. the frown lines, crow’s feet etc., will appear more relaxed and in fact the whole face starts to benefit as patients take on a less stressed and more rested appearance. It’s subtle but noticeable – people will think you look “better” but they’re not sure why.

Filler

Immediately After Filler

When performed properly, patients receive instant gratification with fillers. Dermal fillers work by plumping up the area around the injection site giving your face a more youthful appearance. They can be done within half an hour, and also offer minimal down time. You’ll be asked to come in half an hour prior to your appointment to have the area being treated frozen with a topical cream. Fillers are temporary, meaning they will degrade or be absorbed over time. Most hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have compositions that offer results ranging between six to ten months depending on the product and where it is used.

As with any cosmetic procedure be sure to listen and trust your doctor’s advice. Here at Dermaworks Medical Aesthetics Clinic, our physician offers honest and accurate advice. She can best advise what product will work for you at the time of your appointment. Contact us today!

Hyaluronic Acid in the Prevention of Aging Skin

wrinkle

Once referred to by the media as the “key to the fountain of youth”, hyaluronic acid is a cushion and lubricant found in the body’s connective tissue. It is abundant in our bodies when we are born but slowly recedes over time. It is found in the deeper layers of the dermis and its functions include holding moisture, contributing to the suppleness and resilience of skin, regulating tissue repair, combating inflammatory conditions, and promoting wound healing.

Hyaluronic acid levels peak during adolescence and start to decrease when one reaches the age of 20. As a result of this loss, the skin becomes thinner, loses moisture and becomes less supple. Collagen loss also takes place simultaneously. Collagen depletion is one of the leading causes of the visible aging process because it leads to a loss of elasticity and an uneven skin tone

Factors that affect these levels include genetics, cigarette smoking, diet, nutritional deficiencies, and physical activity. You can replenish levels in your skin by getting injections, taking supplements, eating foods rich in this substance and using topical applications. Treatments help to reduce wrinkles, improve the elasticity of the skin, and keep the skin smooth.

Tips for Replenishing Hyaluronic Acid Levels

There are options that are currently available for replenishing these levels are limited in their effectiveness. One option to have the substance applied topically, which can be effective as a skin moisturizer in some climates but it may actually pull water from the skin in dry climates.

Another option is filler facial injections (also known as dermal fillers, injectable fillers, and injectibles), a popular means of reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles. The effects of these injections last from six to twelve months, and can last longer in some cases. The advantages of using hyaluronic acid fillers is that they are naturally found in human skin and are thus nontoxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible

The most commonly-used form of filler is stabilized non-animal hyaluronic acid gel (NASHA). Restylane®, Teosyal®, and Juvederm® are some of the most well-known brands of NASHA. Depending on dosage and strength, a number of problems may be corrected, from finer lines to deeper creases, as well as plumping up lips and altering facial contours.

While a drawback of these treatments is that they can be expensive, it is currently considered to be the best alternative to surgery with minimal side effects for those who want to reverse the signs of aging skin, reduce deep creases, fine lines, and wrinkles.
