Many of our patients at Dermaworks have asked about PRP treatments, what they are, what it means, and what to expect. Fortunately, we deliver some of the best PRP Ottawa has to offer. We perform PRP treatments for skin rejuvenation and to stimulate hair growth, with amazing results. Ready to hear more?
PRP stands for platelet rich plasma, or blood plasma with a higher than normal concentration of platelets. Platelets are cells in the blood that cause clotting and release growth factors – substances required for the stimulation of growth in living cells.
Platelet rich plasma is taken from the patient’s own blood, so there is no risk of rejection or allergic reaction. A small amount of blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet rich plasma from the other components.
If you see your hairline receding, or thinning areas appearing, the problem lies in the hair follicles. Over time, they start to produce thinner and thinner strands of hair, and finally stop producing any hair at all. To restore the health and vitality of your existing hair follicles, the PRP is injected into the thinning areas to trigger the follicles to function correctly. The growth factors in PRP work to restore function to dying hair follicles. Want to ward off thinning hair? This treatment can help you keep a thicker, fuller head of hair for far longer. Several treatments may be needed, based upon your individual condition.
At Dermaworks, we offer SkinPen microneedling, which is the safest way to perform our Ottawa PRP treatment. When microneedling is performed with PRP, the results in improvement in skin quality can be remarkable.
The handheld SkinPen microneedling device is used to create hundreds of tiny puncture wounds in the skin. The PRP is then applied directly to the treated area to further promote natural collagen production and trigger tissue regeneration. The tiny channels created in the microneedling process allows for deep tissue absorption of the platelet rich plasma.
After our Ottawa microneedling treatment for the face, décolletage, or other area where your skin appears crepey or loose, your skin will be pink and slightly tender, similar to a mild sunburn. This should resolve within 24 to 72 hours. Your results will appear over the next four to eight weeks after treatment, as the body continues to create more collagen.
To treat hair loss, the PRP is injected into the scalp at the level of the hair follicles. It requires several of our Ottawa PRP injections, performed in a grid pattern across the thinning area. Most people we treat do not find the injections to be particularly painful to experience, but if you feel uncomfortable and the injections sites are painful, over the counter ibuprofen works. After treatment, you may see some minor bruising, but this fades quickly. If you are seeing the signs of early hair loss, now is the time to get PRP treatments, as the earlier they occur, the more follicles can be restored.
